A Tribute to The Weakerthans at The Cap

The Feeble Strength is on a mission to keep the songs of The Weakerthans ringing out in dive bars and old derelict haunts all across Canada.

Made up of four pals with a genuine love and fascination for the music of Canada’s most earnest and literate indie rock group, Cailen Alcorn Pygott (No, It’s Fine), Nicholas Laugher (Ocean Charter Of Values), Alaska McMillan (Alaska D’Alifax) and Evan Matthews (Devarrow) joined forces in 2017 for a Holiday tribute show, and have been serenading sweet souls with the music of The Weakerthans since!

With lyrics about love, loss, cats, and pennies for the GST, the Weakerthans captured our hearts and compelled us to scream our throats raw along to the songs for years, and we endeavour to keep that wonderful spirit alive as long as we can.

Cut Cult + Nate & The Busy Boys + Shriven at The Cap

Why are Cut Cult?

Because lugging heavy gear around the world to produce music and play concerts is a cathartic and religious experience.

Who are Cut Cult?

Brian Borcherdt, Loel Campbell, and Matt McQuaid are three of the forming, former, and current members of Holy Fuck (XL Records, Kobalt), who live in Nova Scotia and really enjoy making sounds together. Brian and Loel met while Brian was a record store employee and Loel was a fifteen year old aspiring drummer. Both were from ‘the sticks’ and both wanted to find some kind of community. They made the first Holy Fuck records together and were later joined by Matt ‘punchy’ McQuaid on bass. Once scattered and no longer playing together professionally, they convened as friends in Montreal to make late night noisy confessions. Now, back in their home province, they are Cut Cult. Their resume includes: producing music for other artists, like their own Dusted (Polyvinyl), and co-remixing Radiohead, MIA, etc, warping records into the viral Chipmunks on 16 Speed, playing drums in Wintersleep subbing in for Broken Social Scene and Billy Talent, as well as co-founding (finding?) the Nowadays festival in Dartmouth.

Samaël + Camilo V at The Abbey Cafe

Samaël is a guitarist and instrumental composer from New Brunswick, Canada. He was introduced to the guitar at the age of 12. His innate talent and strength of character helped him learn the instrument quickly and allowed him to already share his passion 5 years later as a teacher.

He perfected his musical knowledge at the prestigious Musicians Institute where he obtained an associate degree in guitar performance in 2010. Subsequently, he obtained a bachelor's degree in classical music at Concordia University and a master's degree in musicology at the University of Montreal.

A real archipelago of sounds, his compositions also earned him the right to be recruited by the Haut St-Jean Philharmonic Orchestra for two musical arrangements, including one of his compositions. His formidable talent and his artistic wealth as well as his devotion also allows him to share the stage with the Acadian group, Sale Barbes, in 2021. He also participates in the fierce national competition, The Canadian Guitar Festival, twice, in 2015 and 2017 then performs several national tours as well as a coast-to-coast tour Canadian in 2018.

Very versatile, Samaël is certainly not afraid of challenges and rather sees them as an opportunity for improvement and learning! Whether for arrangements, compositions, co-productions, or educational services, Samaël will undoubtedly be able to immerse you in his ephemeral universe which awaken our senses to the depth unequivocally reflected from the complexity and dexterity of the artist.

Camilo Villamizar-Báez (he/him)
Is an ECMA-nominated Colombian-Canadian guitarist, bassist, and producer. A self-described lifelong music student, Camilo's latest projects include the formation of Trio de Janeiro, a group focused on the exploration of Brazilian music with a strong emphasis on jazz. He is now presenting a solo version of this concept; featuring a rich rhythm guitar style that seeks to fuse tradition with a life of diverse influences, and words delivered in their original Brazillian Portuguese

Dusted + Dylan Ward at The Muse Cafe

Brian Borcherdt, founder of noisy dance experiment Holy Fuck, embarked on an entirely new path in 2012 with the release of his debut Dusted album, Total Dust, on Polyvinyl. The transition between these two projects was described as the comedown to the wild night before. Fittingly Borcherdt set out on tour with the likes of Perfume Genius and Great Lake Swimmers.

A successful balance between the two bands has played out over the last decade. Dusted’s surprise hit, Property Lines, led to further indie soundtrack work as well as frequent collaborations with the late director Jean-Marc Vallee.

After moving back to Nova Scotia to focus on family, and with a now 6 year old daughter, Dusted is back with a soon-to-be-released new album (featuring Julie Doiron and Alex Edkins of Metz among others), and a minimal yet captivating three member live show, featuring Holy F’s Matt ‘Punchy’ on bass and synth, Maisie Gilbert on percussion and vocals.

The Brood + Michelle Morrison at The Cap

The Brood - Dark and quirky songs that float along like scenes from a night’s dream. Lynchian vibes at the discotheque. Intricate musical interplay, but over a beat you can groove to. The band’s musical recipe is thus: equal parts vocals, keyboards, bass, guitar and drums, interlocking in an electric dixieland tapestry with nods to new wave, disco, psychedelia and grunge. Like a Long Island Iced Tea, there’s a lot going on but it goes down smooth.

Experiencing The Brood live is like getting swallowed up by a black hole that chews you up and spits you out into Studio 54.
