We’ve been patiently waiting and it’s finally here!! Measha Brueggergosman’s new album “I’ve Got A Crush On You” is available today and yo can pick it up through Kelp Records. Check out her song “Misty” with Martin Short here.
Reviews are starting to pour in about the album. Here’s one from Jian Gomeshi of the CBC.
“As embodied in the choice of Feist, Sexsmith and Gallant material, there are a number of nods to Measha’s Canadian roots on this album. That element lends a sweet homespun subtext to the music. And the fact that most of the songs are performed live leaves no room for any doubt of her tremendous musical skills. No studio trickery here. We are a richer community of music lovers and fans for the work that Measha does. This album is no exception. Another bold step for an artist that continues to astound. It is an honour to call her a dear friend.”
For tickets to her NB shows go to our Upcoming Events.
Shivering Songs is proud to present Juno award-winning and Grammy-nominated songstress Measha Brueggergosman in Fredericton, Saint John and Moncton this May 2012.
A New Brunswick native, Brueggergosman is one of the most magnificent performers and vibrant personalities of the day. She has garnered worldwide acclaim as much for her innate musicianship and voluptuous voice as for her incomparable stage presence. Over 3 billion witnessed her epic performance at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Olympic Games. You can now catch Ms. Brueggergosman as celebrity judge for television’s Canada’s Got Talent which premieres this month on CITY TV.
These homecoming shows are in support of brand new album I’ve Got A Crush On You, which will be released April 17 on Kelp Records. The live record was recorded during a series of intimate winter concerts in Halifax NS and hometown Fredericton NB. Both it and these shows will feature a genre defying mix of pieces that Brueggergosman explains, is “an extension of myself.” From Canadian songwriter gems like Feist, Ron Sexsmith, and a new duet with David Myles, to American songbook standards like Gershwin’s “I’ve Got A Crush On You” as well as a medley of traditional and spiritual pieces, the collection of songs reflects Brueggergosman’s extraordinary versatility.
Spirituals and traditional songs which highlight both the power and presence and the delicate nature of Brueggergosman’s voice round out the track-listing including one of her personal favorites “I Come To The Garden” (C.Austin Miles), Spanish cancione ”Nana” (Manuel de Falla y Matheu), the traditional Acadian tune “Partons La Mer Est Belle” (featuring a duet with Lennie Gallant) and the rousing spiritual “Ride On King Jesus.”
Measha Brueggergosman is supported by Musical Director Aaron Davis (piano), Robert Piltch (guitar), Marty Melanson (bass), George Koller (bass), John Johnson (woodwinds), Chris Mitchell (woodwinds), Davide Direnzo (drums), Dave Burton (drums) and the horn section from Halifax’s Mellotones. Featured guest vocalists include Lenny Gallant and David Myles.

The singer, just off a year that saw ECMA honors for Solo Recording and Songwriter of the Year, is set to release brand new album We Made A Spark. The heartrending collection of songs was recorded in a tiny cabin on an island off of New Hampshire, and the intimate confines certainly inspired a similar tone on the recording. Described as “an irresistible find” by the UK’s Maverick Magazine, Cousins is set to shine with these springtime shows.

We’re also happy to unveil a free afternoon of programming at Fredericton’s Cedar Tree Café. Shivering Songs 2nd Announcement!!

Hot Toddy will reunite for a special performance that includes the entirety of their classic album Shoe Factory. One of Canada’s premier acoustic folk/blues ensembles, the trio is comprised of award winning musicians Joel LeBlanc, Tom Easley and Thom Swift. Their innovative, improvisation filled live performances instantly earned Hot Toddy a huge following in Canada, one that remains strong as ever despite a few years in between shows. They will perform Friday evening at the Wilmot United Church with The Olympic Symphonium.

Catherine MacLellan very recently released her fourth album Silhouette, which captures her best qualities effortlessly – stitching together elegantly women songs with her memorable blend of heartfelt and powerfully introspective lyrics and catchy melodies. Recorded largely at a secluded cabin in rural Prince Edward Island with producer David Baxter, the 14-track album is touted by Exclaim! Magazine as being “a near-hour-long album devoid of filler…a testimony to MacLellan’s ascent to greatness.” Catherine will perform as part of the Songwriters & Storytellers Matinee at the Wilmot United Church on Saturday.

You may know Postdata from Wintersleep and you may feel drawn to the haunted melodies as you are drawn to the puzzling pieces of your own dreams. With questions like “Are you in outer space” and musings about “fallen stars in the big black belly of the Universe” Postdata floats above the terra firma where “expired antibiotics” and “empty spray cans” inhabit the planet. From this vantage point of dream flight an otherwordly vision of what ties us to our own gravity emerges. He will perform on Saturday evening at the Wilmot United Church
Other announcements include Montreal’s Snailhouse, Halifax’s Gypsophilia, Acres & Acres and Paper Beat Scissors, Saskatchewan’s These Hands,
local favourites Owen Steel & Babette Hayward, Heat & Lights and the High Water String Band. This year’s Shivering Songs will also see the return of the Songwriter & Storyteller Matinee featuring Catherine Maclellan, David Adams Richards, Andrew Sisk(of Share), Mike O’Neill, a special guest host to be revealed in January.
The festival will again this year return to the Wilmot United Church. Constructed in 1852, the building’s unique “shoe-box” profile, and dramatically high ceilings, produces a spectacular acoustic effect. In addition to offering warm and bold acoustics, Wilmot Church provides a stunning atmosphere. The interior colour scheme, designed in 1948 by the illustrious Canadian artist Alex Colville, coupled with a striking collection of stained glass windows, makes for a full sensory experience.
In October, the festival announced the stunning headliner Mark Kozelek (Sun Kil Moon) from San Francisco, and celebrated NB author David Adams Richards. This year also includes the return of the Bluegrass Brunch, to be held at the Boyce Farmers Market, with Alan Jeffries & Slim Pickins, and a performance by the hosts, the Olympic Symphonium.
The 2012 Shivering Songs festival will run February 3-5 in Fredericton, NB.
Passes ($60), as well as individual show tickets are available now online at www.shiveringsongs.com.
Physical tickets are on sale now in Fredericton at Backstreet Records (384 Queen Street) and Read’s Newsstand (435 King Street)

Shivering Songs 2012 announces
Mark Kozelek(Sun Kil Moon/Red House Painters), Author David Adams Richards and the return of Alan Jeffries and The Bluegrass Brunch

Last winter, New Brunswick chamber-folk group The Olympic Symphonium curated two days of music in their hometown as a way of celebrating their third album. The overwhelming success of the ‘Shivering Songs’ festival made it apparent that there was a demand for folk music in beautiful, quiet settings around the heart of Fredericton and the band decided to make it an annual event.
We are extremely pleased to announce this year’s headliner Mark Kozelek (Sun Kil Moon / Red House Painters) from San Francisco, who will perform the Saturday evening show at the Wilmot United Church. Kozelek has been creating music for over 20 years and consistently releasing albums to unanimous critical praise. His most recent full-length, Admiral Fell Promises, is an evolution in style and impressive progression on the guitar. Inspired by classical guitarists like Andrés Segovia and Ana Vidovic, the stunning finger-work plays compliment to his unique voice and hypnotizing measure perfectly. What’s more, Kozelek will be releasing a new album in November through his Caldo Verde label.
We are also excited to announce that New Brunswick author David Adams Richards will be joining the festival as our annual storyteller. Richards is one of only three writers to earn the Governor General’s Literary Awards for fiction (Nights Below Station Street) and non-fiction (Lines on the Water). He was nominated for Governor General Literary Awards for his novels Road to the Stilt House, For Those Who Hunt the Wounded Down, Mercy Among the Children, and The Lost Highway. Evening Snow Will Bring Such Peace won the Canadian Authors Association Award and For Those Who Hunt the Wounded Down garnered the Alden Nowlan Award for Excellence in English Language Literary Arts and the Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award.
The Bluegrass Brunch with Alan Jeffries & Slim Pickens will return to Shivering Songs, but will be held at the Farmer’s Market on George St this year to accommodate a large amount of attendees. And of course, The Olympic Symphonium will perform at the festival as well. They are currently up for Group, Anglophone and Folk Recording of the Year at the Music New Brunswick Awards and will also perform at the event in mid-October. A second wave of artist announcements and a more detailed schedule will be revealed near the end of the month.

We’re very excited to announce some great new additions to the Shivering Songs festival:
David Myles, a Fredericton hometown hero, is currently touring on his 4th album Turn Time Off, which was produced by Joel Plaskett and recently picked up two Nova Scotia Music Awards. David will be hosting the Saturday afternoon songwriters circle at Wilmot Church, entertaining folks with his perfectly-timed comedic delivery and breaking hearts with his beautiful songs.
Grant Lawrence, author/broadcaster/musician, will also join the Saturday afternoon songwriters circle as a storyteller. Adventures in Solitude, his first novel, was just recently released and is a collection of amazingly-digestible Western Canadian history lessons tied with hilarious anecdotes. Grant will be captivating the audience with stories of the sunshine coast and will bring an interesting twist to the format of the song-circle.
For years, the gregarious and encyclopedic Lawrence has hosted the top-rated CBC Radio 3 Podcast with Grant Lawrence, a weekly showcase of Canadian independent music. Grant also hosts Grant Lawrence Live, a live and interactive daily program on CBC Radio 3?s popular web radio station, also airing on Sirius 86. Grant can be heard throughout the week on various CBC Radio One programs such as DNTO, Spark,All Points West, On The Coast and has been a frequent past contributor to Q and Sounds Like Canada. Grant also hosts many major music events, such as the Polaris Music Prize Gala, the Western Canadian Music Awards and various festivals around North America, and conducts music industry seminars and keynote addresses on music and media related topics.

Cold comfort: a new winter music fest
Here Magazine By Diane Cole
The cold winds of winter are about to blow some toasty tunes our way. In January, fans of The Olympic Symphonium will get an extra special treat when the folk trio release their third album and launch a new music festival, aptly titled Shivering Songs.
The Olympic Symphonium performing at the Picaroon’s Brewtique on Queen Street Dec. 10.
“It’s an idea that we’ve wanted to do for the last couple of years,” says singer and guitarist, Graeme Walker. “We figured with the album coming out in January it would be a nice time to give it a try and throw the two together.”
The festival will take place from January 29-30 in Fredericton and feature performances by Tim Walker, Isaac & Blewett, The Belle Comedians, and Montreal collective Snailhouse.
It will run alongside the In the Dead of Winter fest in Halifax, which will help out those music lovers who can’t handle the treacherous Trans Canada Highway in January.
“It sort of works in two ways- to have another smaller festival in this end of the country, and it will be good for the city and at the same time it’s beneficial for us because our album is coming out,” says Walker.
The album, The City Won’t Have Time to Fight, will see a slight departure for Walker, bassist Kyle Cunjak and guitarist/ vocalist Nick Cobham. Their last two albums were recorded over the course of several months. But this time around, they spent a week holed up in an old house in downtown Fredericton with longtime producer Brad Perry.
“We said whatever comes out of it, comes out of it,” Walker says. “We stripped it down a little bit, but I think it works with the songs. There’s more clarity to it and the songs are more developed and have more growth. We’re excited and we hope people will like it.”

New folk-music festival planned for January
The Daily Gleaner By Adam Bowie
The Shivering Songs Music Festival will take place in Fredericton on Jan. 29-30, putting regional musicians such as The Olympic Symphonium, Isaac & Blewett, and Alan Jeffries on stages with award-winning artists such as Prince Edward Island songbird Catherine MacLellan, Montreal-based folk collective Snailhouse and Nova Scotia’s The Belle Comedians.
Nick Cobham, who plays guitar and sings with The Olympic Symphonium, said the organizers of the festival wanted to do something special to celebrate the release of his band’s new album, The City Won’t Have Time To Fight.
So pulling together a small folk-music festival seemed like a chance to celebrate the new songs with some trusted colleagues.
“We wanted to get a bunch of good friends together, people who we’ve really enjoyed playing with over the past few years,” he said.
Friday December 10, 2011
The Olympic Symphonium hosted a press conference at the Picaroon’s Brewtique (418 Queen St) on Friday, December 10th at noon to announce the Shivering Songs festival that will take place in Fredericton at the end of January. The band performed a few songs acoustically, and spoke about the festival.
Tickets for the event will go on sale Friday at The Brewtique and will also be available at Read’s News Stand, Backstreet records and online at shiveringsongs.eventbrite.com
